Down East Girls Softball League

New for Spring 2010 - 6U Division

We will begin offering a new, 6U Division for 5 and 6 year old girls in the spring of 2010.  This division is intended to be an instructional division to act as a bridge between strict Tee ball and machine-pitch 8U division.  It will feature a combination of machine pitch and Tee "pitch" and smaller team sizes while emphasizing fundamentals and skill development and defensive responsibility.  Since this is a new program within Babe Ruth and the Down East Girls Softball League, we will be inviting comments regarding the proposed rules listed below and offering parents and players an opportunity to "try the game on" by participating in some test matches to see how well the game works under the modified rules.  Experienced coaches are sought to help with this age division. If you have questions or comments or just want to be notified regarding your daughter or granddaughter playing in this division, complete the form below and your comments/questions will be be routed appropriately.

Suggested 6U Rules

  1. Teams will be limited to a maximum of 6 players. 5 players will play defense at a time. Pitcher, 1st base, 2nd base, Shortstop and 3rd base will be positioned as normal in the field. No catcher will be positioned behind the plate.
  2. Games will be 5 innings in length. In the event all 6 players are present, no player shall sit out more than one defensive inning.
  3. The pitcher will be positioned behind the front edge of the pitching machine with one foot inside and one foot outside the 8’ diameter pitching circle until the pitch is released.
  4. A 25’ arc will be chalked from baseline to baseline. No defensive player may field a ball within the 25’ arc. Balls hit that do not cross the 25’ arc are considered foul balls. Bunting, fake bunting and stealing are not allowed.
  5. Coaches will operate the pitching machine while their team is batting. Batters will receive up to 3 pitches from the machine. If the batter has not put the ball into play during the first three pitches, the ball will be placed upon a tee standing on home plate. The batter will have 2 additional chances to put the ball into play. If after the second swing from the tee, the ball has not been put into play, the batter is out. If, on the second and subsequent swing from the tee, the ball is a foul ball, the batter will be awarded an additional swing until either the ball is put into play or is swung at and missed thereby striking out.
  6. Double safety bases will be used at 1st base. All batters wear helmets plus face masks while on the field on offense. Pitchers are required to wear a protective mask while the ball is live on defense.
  7. Each batter will bat in turn until 3 outs are made or until all players present have batted once, whichever comes first.
